In a rare dual track and field meet, SBCC swept Cuesta in the San Luis Obispo Town Classic on Saturday.
The Vaquero men won 162-128 and the women prevailed 189-123.
The Vaqueros racked up six event wins with four of those in meet record times. The men were led by the double wins of freshman Ian Roberts (Ventura High) in the mile (4:24.03 Meet Record) and 800m (1:59.82). Sophomore Cliff Lekas (Dos Pueblos) won the 400m in meet-record time of 49.50.
Cody Bidlow, another former Dos Pueblos athlete, posted the win in the 100m in meet-record time 11.12.
The Vaqueros also notched two relay victories on the day, leading off the track action with a 43.01 meet record 4 x 100m relay effort. The team was made up of Bidlow, Geoff Brown (Mission Hills), Lekas, and Randy Davis (El Camino High, Oceanside). The foursome of Bidlow, Brown, Tristan Lake (San Marcos High) and Lekastook the 4 x 200m relay.
“Ian (Roberts) was out sick for a week and we just got a week of strength work in this week,” coach Scott Fickerson said. “Today was basically a speed workout for him, so it was great to see him get out there and compete so tough and pull out some good wins. The whole team really stepped up a notch today after our season opener and had some great performances. We’re still working very hard in training, so this is a great sign of things to come.”
The women’s win was a well rounded effort with four field event wins, two relay victories and two individual titles on the track.
Kristina Khalil (San Marcos High) had a banner day winning the 100m hurdles (17.00), Long Jump (4.66m) and Triple Jump (10.12m). The foursome of Sara Jungersten (Gothenburg, Sweden), Emily Walker (San Luis Obispo High), Kalina Rock (Coronado High, Las Vegas), and Susan Waters (The Dunham School, Baton Rouge, LA) won the 4 x 100m in meet-record time 50.78. The same first three combined with Erin Ingalls (Dos Pueblos High) to take the 4 x 200m in 1:52.32.
Walker took the individual 400m title in meet-record time 59.66 seconds. Also notching field wins were Aubreyanna Thompson (Pacifica High, Oxnard) in the shot put (9.75m) and Kathryn Rucker (Burbank High, Sacramento) in the high jump (1.53m).
“The women really spread out their points today and that will be helpful later in the season in conference meets,” Fickerson said. “I’m really proud of the effort by the ladies and particularly Christina Khalil winning three events and getting a personal best in the triple jump, and Emily Walker in her 400m with a big personal best time.
There were a lot of great efforts out there. I’m very excited to see what’s coming later in the season for these ladies.”
