RANCHO SANTA FE – Glen Scher shot a 9-over par 225 and tied for 18th-place as the UC Santa Barbara golf team opened its winter/spring schedule with a ninth-place team finish at The Farms Collegiate Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe on Tuesday.
In the tournament hosted by the University of San Diego, the Gauchos improved their score in each round. In the first round, they shot a 316, but bounced back with a 308 in the second round and a 301 in today’s final round. Their final round score was the fifth best among the 12 teams competing.
Scher, who redshirted the 2011-12 season, mirrored UCSB’s pattern at The Farms Golf Club. After carding a 7-over par 79 in the first round, he rebounded with a 2-over par second round and an even-par final round. Jordan Epstein finished second on the Gauchos with a 15-over par 231. His best round of the tournament was the second when he checked-in with a 2-over par 73.
Brett Silvernail (22-over par, 238), Tyler Smith (23-over par, 239) and Marshall Colby (27-over par, 243).
The tournament was won by Pacific, which edged Saint Mary’s College by three shots, 872-875. Missouri was third at 894 and San Diego fourth at 897. Missouri’s Emilio Cuartero carded a 1-under par 215 to win the individual title by a stroke over Jack Mulroy of Fresno State and Martin Keskari of Santa Clara.
UCSB returns to the links on Feb. 25 when it participates in The North Ranch Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, Calif. The teams will play two rounds on Feb. 25 and the final round on Feb. 26.
