The Golden State Athletic Conference announced today the men’s basketball awards for the 2012-13 season. Senior guards Preston Branson of Dallas, Texas and Jordan Sachs of La Habra, Calif., were named to the All-GSAC Team while head coach John Moore was named the GSAC Coach of the Year.
Branson, who was named to the All-GSAC Team for the third time, ranks fourth in the GSAC in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game. With a free-throw percentage of .786 (114 of 145), he claims the number seven ranking in the GSAC. Branson has tallied 1,546 career points and currently ranks seventh on Westmont’s Career scoring list.
Sachs ranks sixth in the GSAC from the charity stripe, shooting .803 (98 of 122). He is the GSAC’s seventh leading rebounder at 6.7 boards per game and ranks fifth in assists at 3.53 per game. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.56 is also fifth in the GSAC. Sachs is averaging 10.6 points per game.
Moore was named the GSAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his Westmont career. Previously, Moore received the award for the 1998-99 season when the Warriors went 29-6 and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament semifinals.
At 398-212 (.652) during his 20 year Westmont career, Moore is just two wins shy of winning his four-hundredth game as the Warriors’ head coach. His 25-year head coaching record is 477-286 (.625).
The Warriors open play in the Golden State Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament as the number one seed after posting a conference record this season of 12-2 and an overall record of 24-6. Westmont will host eighth-seeded San Diego Christian (7-16, 4-10) on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
If the Warriors win on Thursday, they will host both men’s semifinal games on Saturday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Westmont is slated to play in the second game.
