Peterson named ASP Breakthrough Performer of Year

Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson was among the featured award recipients at yesterday’s ASP World Surfing Awards banquet held in Surfers Paradise, Australia.

Peterson, who won the U.S. Open of Surfing last August as a rookie on the Women’s World Tour, was named Breakthrough Performer of the Year.

“I am so stoked and honored to have won Breakthrough Performer this year,” Peterson said in an email to Presidio Sports. “Every girl on tour I feel had a break through year so I am so humbled to have got it. It was a great night and thanks to the ASP for all you guys do. 2013 is going to be a great year, and many amazing times to come!”

Peterson is in Australia right now with the rest of the world’s top surfers as the season-opening events for the ASP World Tour begin this weekend.

Joel Parkinson was recognized as the reigning ASP Men’s World Champion.

?It?s beautiful to have everyone here tonight,? Parkinson said. ?We all come together and really celebrate last season amongst our friends and family. The new year, for me, begins tomorrow. Tonight, I just feel so fortunate to be up here and to be supported by my beautiful family. I love them and am only here because of them.?
