San Marcos ended Buena’s 19-year run as Channel League champion on Thursday night by beating the Bulldogs 2-1 at Warkentin Stadium.
The Royals’ win gives San Marcos a second-place finish in league play while Buena falls to third-place. 1993 was the last year that Buena didn’t win at least a share of the league title.
Tasha Wood gave the Royals their first lead in the 10th minute, scoring off a corner kick by Hannah Harrah.
Buena evened the game at 1-1 in the 8th minute of the second half but San Marcos responded soon after.
Emily Allen scored the game winner on an assist from Olivia Jones.
Both teams will learn their opening CIF opponents when playoff brackets are released on Monday.
