After hitting the post, Bryn Jewett wasn’t going to be denied the second time she got a scoring opportunity.
Jewett took a throw-in from Phoebe Madsen, turned two defenders and fired a long-range shot that went under the goalkeeper to rally Laguna Blanca to a 1-1 tie against Cate in a crosstown Condor League girls soccer match on Saturday.
“Anytime we play Cate, it’s a game full of intensity and desire,” said Laguna coach Kevin Shertzer.
Saturday’s match was the second meeting in a week for the schools. Cate won the earlier encounter 2-0.
“We were eager to show the kind of soccer we are capable of playing,” Shertzer said of the rematch.
But the Owls fell behind in the eighth minute. A looping shot by Cate’s Makena Fetzer took a big bounce over the Laguna goalkeeper’s out-stretched arms and went into the net for a 1-0 Rams’ lead.
Madsen came close to equalizing for Laguna Blanca, She ripped a shot from 20 yards that the Cate goalkeeper scrambled to save.
Cate coach Lisa Holmes said it was frustrating result for her team.
“A tie in a game we felt we should have won is hard to take, but this team has shown resilience if they’ve shown anything this season,” she said. “We will be ready for our final regular season game at Thacher on Wednesday.”
