GBK: Bishop Diego falls by one at Bishop Union

A six-hour road trip ended in heartbreak for the Bishop Diego girls basketball team.

Bishop Union scored on offensive rebound with three seconds left to beat the Cardinals 51-50 in a CIF Division 5-AA playoff game Saturday night in the high desert city of Bishop.

“It’s a tough way to go,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said. “We dug ourselves in a deep hole early in the game.”

The Cardinals trailed by 11 in the second quarter, were down by eight at halftime and by seven at the start of the fourth quarter.

But they battled back and took a 48-45 lead with 2:30 to go.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, four of the next five referee calls went against them, said Burich.

Down by one with 20 seconds to go, Josie McCoy made a pair of free throws to put Bishop Diego ahead 50-49. Bishop Union fired a shot and the Cardinals grabbed the rebound, but an official ruled they stepped out of bounds, giving the ball back to the Broncs.

Bishop Union missed a shot with seven seconds to go but it got the rebound and scored the go-ahead basket.

Greer Shull scored 18 points, McCoy added 12 points and Jordyn Lilly tallied seven points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Cardinals, who started the year 0-5, finished with a 19-9 record.
