SBCC got a couple of solid starting pitching performances on Saturday in a baseball split with Cabrillo in Aptos. The Vaqueros (1-2) took the opener 3-2 and dropped the second game 4-3.
Tyler Gilbert, a left-handed freshman from nearby Santa Cruz, tossed five-hit ball for eight innings in the opener, allowing just two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts and one walk. Noah Villegas pitched the ninth for his first save.
The Vaqueros got only two hits and scored all three runs in the fourth on Trey Barrett’s RBI fielder’s choice, a sacrifice fly by Tyler Sharpe and a wild pitch that scored Tony Simon.
Stephen Foote threw six innings in the nightcap for the Vaqueros, allowing just one run on five hits. Colby Taylor went 2-4 with two runs.
Santa Barbara took a 3-1 lead into the eighth but Cabrillo (2-1) scored one in the eighth and two in the ninth to get the win. The tying run came on an RBI bunt single by Eric Vegas and Drake Yoshio drove in the game-winner on a bases-loaded single with one out.
