East L.A. jumped out to a 9-1 lead after five innings on Saturday and SBCC was held to two singles in the first eight innings of an 11-4 nonconference baseball loss at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros (6-5) had their five-game win streak snapped and suffered their first home loss in four appearances this year. Sergio Luna went seven innings for the victory, giving up just two hits and an unearned run while striking out six and walking one.
Luna retired 12 in a row from the third to the seventh.
Left-hander Tyler Gilbert (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and hit two batters. On the day, five Vaquero hurlers issued eight walks.
“It was a sideways game that favored them,” said coach Jeff Walker. “The momentum swung to their side early and we couldn’t do anything to get it back offensively or defensively.
“East L.A. is a good team, they’re a playoff team. We won the week (going 2-1) and that’s our goal every week. We took some good strides this week and this was a minor setback.”
Right fielder Kyle Peralta went 2-4 with two RBIs for the Huskies (6-5). He had a two-run triple in the third. East L.A. sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits.
Payton Milone and Zach Zehner singled to open the Vaquero ninth. With one out, Colby Taylor delivered an RBI hit. Jared Dinges added a two-out, two-run single up the middle.
The Vaqueros host El Camino on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
