Max Wankner played a monster game for the Cate boys basketball team, but the Rams fell short in overtime in their CIF Division 5A playoff opener Wednesday night, falling to AGBU Pasadena 83-80 in overtime.
Wankner scored 35 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Cate (12-8), which let a seven-point lead get away in the fourth quarter.
AGBU relied on its outside shooting to keep the game close. The Spartans hit some clutch 3-pointers and free throws in overtime to pull out the win.
Besides Wankner’s big performance, Spencer Shapiro played an all-around solid game for the Rams. He recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. Austin Gallegos and Kyle Mayfield each scored 10 points.
