Caleb Richey’s triple-double keyed a 75-43 victory for Bishop Diego’s boys basketball team in its CIF opener on Wednesday.
The Cardinals defeated host La Sierra Academy in a Division 5AA game.
Richey totaled 20 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
“When he is distributing like that he really picks up the energy of the entire team,” said Cardinals head coach Dean Prophet of his senior guard.
Thomas Lash also scored 20 points for Bishop Diego, with Grant Sexton adding 16.
Bishop Diego took control in the third quarter by outscoring La Sierra 25-8. Prophet was able to empty his bench in the fourth quarter and give every player court time.
“We were just a little quicker, I think,” Prophet said. “Our boys defended well tonight, they cut down on second chances.”
Bishop Diego (14-12) hosts a second-round game on Friday night at 7 p.m.
