Corona del Mar used a potent third quarter to rush past visiting San Marcos and into the Division 3AA CIF semifinals with an 83-62 victory on Tuesday.
Max Stone led the Sea Kings with 22 points, nine of which came on three 3-pointers made in a third quarter that had CDM outscoring San Marcos 23-10.
“The game was really lost in about a 6 minute span,” said Royals head coach Dave Odell. “The last 2 minutes of the 2nd and the first half of the 3rd. Otherwise that is an even game.”
Seniors Jake Wheelock and Ian Douglas led the Warriors with 13 points each. Christian Widmer and Kevin Hempy also reached double figures with 10 each.
San Marcos finishes its season with a record of 18-8. The Royals finished second in the Channel League and were champions of the Jim Bashore Tournament in December.
“Overall, I’m very pleased with this season. If you’d asked me this summer if I thought we could accomplish all that we did, I could not have predicted it,” Odell said. “This team evolved so much from the summer until now. It’s a real testimony to these guys and how coachable they are and what wonderful men they have become. I’m really proud to have been associated with them.”
Blake Grable added 19 points for Corona del Mar, which as the No. 3 seed improves to 21-9.
The semifinal round is Friday night.
