Sophomore outfielder Zach Zehner went 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs on Tuesday as SBCC topped L.A. Harbor 7-4 in a nonconference baseball game in Wilmington. Zehner has been on a tear the last three games, hitting .615 (8-13) with a homer and eight RBIs.
It was the fourth straight win for the Vaqueros (5-4) and put them over the .500 mark for the first time this year. Harbor fell to 1-7-1.
The Vaqueros have outscored their last four opponents 46-9, winning 10-2, 11-2, 18-1 and 7-4. On Tuesday, they snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Ryan Massengale, a 6-7 freshman left-hander, came on with one out in the fifth and SBCC clinging to a 5-4 lead. He earned his first college win by tossing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. He gave up just two hits and struck out five.
Noah Villegas pitched the ninth for his second save. Four SBCC hurlers held the Seahawks to four hits.
“We got a lead and then responded when they came back,” said coach Jeff Walker. “That was a great performance by Ryan Massengale.”
SBCC hosts East L.A. on Thursday and Saturday. First pitch is 2 p.m. on Thursday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
