SBCC sophomore Michelle Herrera?has been named WSC North Player of the Week for women?s basketball.
The 5-10 guard/forward from Santa Ynez High scored 28 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals?in a pair of victories last week. She was 8-12 from the field, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range.
Last Wednesday, she scored 15 points and hit 4-6 free throws in the last 40 seconds of a historic 70-67 upset at No. 2 Ventura. It was the first home conference loss in 23 years for the Pirates and snapped their 66-game WSC North win streak.
Herrera tallied 13 in Saturday’s come-from-behind 72-70 home win over Cuesta. The first-place Vaqueros (15-7, 3-0) erased a 13-point deficit in the last nine minutes.
Santa Barbara moved back into the state rankings this week. They’re No. 19 in the state poll and 10th in Southern Cal.
The Vaqueros travel to L.A. Pierce on Wednesday night and host Moorpark on Saturday. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
