UCSB seniors Machael David, Nic Ryan and Peter McGlynn were each drafted by Major League Soccer clubs on Tuesday in the league’s Supplemental Draft.
David was selected by the Colorado Rapids in the third round and was the 44th pick overall. Ryan also went in the third round to the Houston Dynamo as the 56th overall pick. The San Jose Earthquakes selected McGlynn in the fourth round as the 72nd overall pick.
David played in 11 games, starting nine during his senior campaign. The defensive midfielder scored in the 6-2 victory at Seattle (Sept. 16) and assisted Ema Boateng’s game-winning goal against Sacramento State (Oct. 16). During his career at UCSB, he played in 66 games, scored three goals and tallied 10 assists.
His career accolades include Big West Freshman of the Year, Soccer America All-Freshman Second Team, All-Big West Second Team, Goal.com Freshman Team, and TopDrawerSoccer.com All-Rookie First Team honors. As a sophomore, he was named to the All-Big West First Team. David has also been a standout in the classroom, earning four-consecutive Big West All-Academic honors and three UCSB Golden Eagle Awards.
Ryan ended his career at UCSB with a bang as he garnered All-Far West Region Third Team honors to go along with his Big West Midfielder of the Year award. The senior led the Gauchos and tied for third in the Big West with eight goals. He added three assists for 19 points, which also tied him for third conference wide. Ryan scored at least one point in 10 of UCSB’s 19 matches and tallied four game-winning goals.
McGlynn played in 77 games during his career at UCSB and posted two goals and eight assists for 12 career points. In 2010, he garnered Second Team All-Big West honors. While at UCSB, he logged nearly 5,000 minutes on the pitch for the Gauchos and helped lead the defense to 29 shutouts, including a school-record 16 in 2010.
Including today’s draftees, UCSB has had 25 players drafted to the MLS since 2004. David is not the first Gaucho to go to Colorado; he follows in the footsteps of Ciaran O’Brien, who was drafted by the club in 2008. The Dynamo, meanwhile, had previously drafted UCSB product David Walker in 2010. McGlynn is the fourth Gaucho to be picked up by San Jose following Sam Garza, James Kiffe and Greg Curry.
