L.A. Pierce overcame a 57-50 second-half deficit on Wednesday night and rallied past SBCC for an 84-71 men’s basketball victory in Woodland Hills. The WSC North-leading Brahmas (15-6, 4-0) outscored the Vaqueros 34-14 to end the game.
Rico Failla tallied 18 points while playing just 20 minutes due to foul trouble. He had 13 in the first half, which ended with the Vaqueros (4-12, 0-4) on top 38-37.
Logan Louks scored 16 points with five rebounds and five assists. Trace Yager had 12 points and six boards and Michael Hansen chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Pierce made 22-of-31 free throws compared to just 1-4 for the Vaqueros.
After scoring 13 first-half points, Failla picked up his fourth foul early in the second half. He eventually fouled out, along with Hansen and Jalani Davis.
“After we got up by seven in the second half, we made four straight turnovers and there was a big momentum swing,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We didn’t execute against their press. Prior to their run, we missed about four layups that would have padded our lead.”
The Brahmas outshot the Vaqueros 55.2 to 34.2 percent in the second half and 49.2 to 39.5 for the game. SBCC made nearly 50 percent from the 3-point arc (10-22) but was outrebounded 48-36. Pierce also blocked seven shots.
SBCC has a bye Saturday, then hosts Moorpark on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
