Santa Barbara High?s girls soccer team pulled off a stunning victory Tuesday night, beating perennial league power Buena 1-0 at Peabody Stadium.
It was the Dons? first win against the Bulldogs in decades.
The goal came in the 73rd minute. Annie DeBruynkops put a ball in the box and Megan Flynn pounced on the ball and tucked it away.
?We had five good looks to their one,? Santa Barbara coach Jeff Johnson said.
Santa Barbara played a solid defensive game against a direct Buena attack.
?Our goalie, Ali Tro, had to make one good save on the night,? Johnson said. ?Overall, our ladies put their shift in and managed the game. Our back row and middle three kept the play in front of them and held Buena to minimal looks throughout the game.
?It was a very physical match as Buena plays very direct, looking for the flick and second ball and we held our own against them and accepted the challenge this evening.?
The Dons were missing two starters for the game, which made the victory even more special.
?There is a belief amongst the girls, and this is what you need,? Johnson said. So we will do our best to keep things going strong.?
Santa Barbara (8-1-3, 2-0-0) faces another challenge on Thursday when it travels to San Marcos, which is also unbeaten in league.
