Cate overcame the loss of Brittany Newsome and routed Vasquez 41-14 in a non-league girls basketball game Saturday at Cate. It was the Rams’ first win since Dec. 19.
Newsome, a talented sophomore forward, suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the game. She was taken to the hospital
The Rams did get a boost with the return of Erika Noble. She sparked the Rams with six points, six rebounds and three steals.
“She gave us a new level of focus on the defensive end,” said coach Jay Dorion.
Lanea Pearson led Cate with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbed eight rebounds. Grace Dickman was all over the court. She had nine points, eight rebounds, eight steals and five assists.
Dorion was proud of his team’s resolve after the injury to Newsome.
“Having had the whole team together for the first time since the second week of the season tonight, it is a difficult pill to swallow that we now have to soldier on without one of our most dynamic and effective players, but the girls have been stepping up to the challenge of different roles all season, so we will put our heads down and work hard toward a match-up with Thacher on Wednesday,” he said.
