Santa Paula hit 10 straight free throws in the fourth quarter and handed Bishop Diego’s girls basketball team its first loss in Frontier League play, 42-40, Tuesday night.
The Cardinals had two chances to tie the score but couldn’t knock down a shot. After the first miss, they fouled and Santa Paula failed to convert both free throws, giving Bishop one more opportunity.
“We had a last-second shot but it did not fall for us,” said Bishop coach Jeff Burich.
The result leaves both teams at 8-1.
Bishop Diego was missing a starting post players to an illness, and Santa Paula took advantage on the boards.
“They killed us on the offensive boards,” said Burich.
Bishop led 40-34 in the fourth quarter, but Santa Paula, with the help of its free-throw shooting, went on an 8-1 run to take the lead for good.
Greer Shull scored 17 points and Josie McCoy added 12 for Bishop (15-8), which plays at Carpinteria on Thursday.
