Ventura’s boys soccer team put an end to Santa Barbara High’s unbeaten Channel League season on Thursday by gaining a 1-0 victory.
Joe Hernandez controlled a loose ball with one touch before firing home a shot from 20-yards out.
“We allowed a good player to get a good look,” said Dons head coach Todd Heil said.
The game was scoreless until Hernandez scored in the 72nd minute.
Santa Barbara held the shots advantage 17-13. Cougars goalie Eric Kam made a number of key saves, including a point-blank stop on a header from Jelan Hutton.
“We played well enough to win,” Heil said.
The result leaves the two teams tied in league play at 4-1. Ventura is 18-3-1 overall while Santa Barbara is 17-4-1.
It was a game between two top-10 teams in Division 1.
“The atmosphere was incredible,” Heil said.
