Cate’s boys soccer team was able to put together a resounding 5-1 victory over Carpinteria on Monday as the two inter-city schools played in a non-league match originally scheduled for December.
Tyler Douglas took a pass from Joshua Yaro just two minutes into the game to give Cate the lead.
The Warriors controlled play for much of the opening 20 minutes but Cate scored twice in that time on quick counter strikes, the second from Geoffrey Acheampong.
Yaro scored his own early in the second half to make the score 3-0. Acheampong then converted a penalty kick before the Warriors broke through just after, taking the shut out away from Rams freshman keeper Keller Mochel.
The final three minutes of play saw a flurry of three quick goals, including Cate’s final goal from Leighton Brillo-Sonnino.
Genaro Hurtado scored for the Warriors. Carlos Orozco was credited with the assist.
Cate, the No. 4 team in Division 6, improves to 8-2-1 and 4-0 in the Condor League.
Carpinteria (9-2-3, 5-1-1 TVL)came into the match having won three straight and loses for just the second time this season.
“Our midfield presence was the best it’s been this year–especially Yaro, Brillo-Sonnino, and senior Justin Kim,” reported Rams head coach Peter Mack. “I couldn’t be happier with the way we competed or the way we played. Carp is an excellent team and this is a very, very good win.”
Acheampong scored two goals on his birthday and was named the Carpinteria Coastal View Player of the Game.
