Dos Pueblos’ boys basketball team defeated Lakewood for the second time in a week in Wednesday’s 66-55 non-league clash in Long Beach.
Cruz Mertens scored 22 points to lead the Chargers, who also got 10 points from Gerry Perez and 9 each from Chris Williams and Zach Shugart.
Chris Bell’s 18 points was a team high for Lakewood. Jamal Watson added 17.
The Chargers gained the upper hand in the first half, taking a 29-19 lead into halftime. The two teams played evenly in the second half.
“It was a physical game with both teams combining for 50 ft attempts,” reported Chargers head coach Joe Zamora.
The two teams had just met on December 28 in a game at the Ventura Kiwanis Tournament that DP won 56-37. Mertens led the Chargers in scoring in that one too with a game-high 26.
The result makes Dos Pueblos 9-4 overall. Lakewood is 5-11.
