Bakersfield went on a 15-3 run late in the first half on Saturday and went on to defeat No. 11 SBCC 63-52 in the consolation semifinals of the Grossmont Holiday Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The Renegades (5-7) got 24 points and seven rebounds from Brittany Smith. Bakersfield led 27-22 at intermission and outshot the Vaqueros 39.2 to 31.7 percent for the game.
The 11th-ranked Vaqueros (12-6) fell behind by 14 points in the second half before rallying to within four at 56-52 on a free throw by Keia Nobles with 2:14 to play. The Renegades closed the game on a 7-0 run.
Taylor DeSilva had nine points and eight rebounds for Santa Barbara, which dropped its third straight game. The Vaqueros made just 55.6 percent of their free throws and were outscored 22-10 from the charity stripe.
Nobles, Jessica Valadez and Jasmine Mata all had nine points. Valadez hit 3-of-4 from 3-point land. Sara Crane added six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
DeSilva hit 4-5 from the field but the rest of the starters converted only 23.3 percent (7-30).
The Vaqueros will play their final nonconference game on Jan. 5 at West L.A.
