Max Wankner was unstoppable inside for Cate, scoring 28 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to power the Rams to a 69-62 win over a scrappy Valley Christian team at the Ojai Valley Classic basketball tournament at Villanova Prep on Thursday.
Wankner scored 16 of his points in the first half as the Rams took a 34-29 lead. The lead expanded to 15 in the third quarter, but Valley Christian shot its way back into the game by making several 3-point baskets. VC hit 10 from behind the arc in the game.
Cate kept its poise and held on down the stretch for its second win.
Spencer Shapiro had a solid game with 14 points, six rebounds, eight assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Austin Gallegos added 11 points and four assists. Wankner also had three assists.
Cate plays Providence Hall on Friday in the semifinals.
