Vaqueros finish up in 4th at Gilchrist Invitational

Fresno City shot 47 percent and dominated the boards to hand SBCC a 74-48 women’s basketball loss on Sunday afternoon in the third-place game of the Gilchrist Invitational at College of the Sequoias.

The Rams, ranked No. 3 in California, improved to 5-2. The Vaqueros (7-3) finished fourth in the prestigious 16-team tourney that featured five of the top seven ranked teams.

Sophomore Michelle Herrera made the all-tournament team after a 10-point, 4-assist performance. Brooke Amenta and Taylor DeSilva scored nine apiece and Keia Nobles had six rebounds.

Fresno outshot SBCC 47 to 37 percent and won the rebound battle 44-21. The Rams led 33-25 at halftime.

The Vaqueros struggled from the free-throw line, making just 50 percent (8-16). Fresno hit 14-19 in the second half and 22-34 for the game.

“We got a lot of stops on defense but we just weren’t converting on the offensive end,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We played very hard against two of the top teams in the state the last two days.

“I’m really proud of our team, taking fourth place in a tough 16-team tourney.”
SBCC opens play in Hancock’s Lady Bulldog Classic on Thursday with a 3 p.m. game against Reedley.
