UC Santa Barbara senior Sweets Underwood has garnered her second consecutive Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor after delivering a double-double in the Gauchos’ victory over Pac-12 opponent Washington on Saturday.
The 6-0 forward notched 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds – marking her second straight and fourth double-double of the season – as the Gauchos won 54-46. The victory marked UCSB’s first over a Pac-12 team since the 2009 season. Additionally, UCSB halted Washington’s four-game winning streak and handed the Huskies their first home loss of the season, and just their second overall loss this year.
Underwood got the Gauchos off to a hot start as she collected 12 of her 15 points in the first stanza, helping them climb to a 17-point lead at one point. Underwood made 6-of-11 shots from the field and went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. She also had three assists and one steal in 34 minutes of action.
The win over Washington marked the Gauchos’ second straight road victory and improved their record to 4-5.
Underwood claimed Player of the Week honors last week after a 22-point, 11 rebound performance in a win over Loyola Marymount.
UCSB will look to stay hot on the road tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 18 as it takes on Brigham Young. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start (Pacific Time) and will be broadcast live in Santa Barbara on KZSB AM 1290
