San Marcos loses a goal, leaves SLO with 2-2 tie

San Marcos had a goal taken away on a bizarre play in the second half and settled for a 2-2 tie at San Luis Obispo in a non-league girls soccer match on Tuesday.

Kaitlyn Saperstein broke through the defense and scored what the Royals thought was the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute. But the goal was nullified.

“The whistle blew and they nullified the goal and gave us a penalty kick,” San Marcos coach Macie Berlin said.

The Royals missed the PK, leaving the score tied at 2-2. They missed another quality chance in the 77th minute.

Saperstein played a strong game for the Royals, scoring their first goal and assisting on the second. The first goal, which tied the score at 1-1, came on a PK after Olivia Jones was tackled in the box in the 50th minute.

San Marcos took a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute when Saperstein hit a free kick that Caroline Vance finished.

San Luis Obispo tied the score in the 72nd minute.

Berlin said she was pleased how the team played in the second half.

“I’m extremely happy with our second half,” she said. “It makes me very hopeful and very pleased for the future.”

The result leaves San Marcos with a 2-1-2 record.
