San Marcos stepped up its defensive intensity and held Bakersfield-Taft to 15 second-half points in a 66-44 win onThursday at the Coast Union Tournament in Cambria.
“We came out with a greater sense of urgency in the second half, with a swarming defensive effort that led to many transition opportunities,” said San Marcos coach Dave Odell.
The Royals trailed 29-28 at halftime.
Again, it was the Hempy-Hurtado show leading the San Marcos offense. Uriel Hurtado made 7 of 11 shots and scored 17 points. He also had seven rebounds.
Hempy scored 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting.
Coach Odell praised the play of Christian Widmer and Bryce Ridenour who sparked the defensive onslaught in the second half.
“I also thought that Greg Zajic had some solid minutes tonight. He seems to be getting more and more comfortable with each game” said Odell.
San Marcos plays Templeton on Friday.
