Caleb Richey led a Bishop Diego surge in the second half, and the Cardinals basketball team pulled away from Fillmore, 58-42, to take third place at the Fillmore Tournament on Saturday.
Richey made four 3-pointers and scored 29 points.
“The first half was close,” Bishop coach Dean Prophet said. “We were up 23-17 and it felt like a struggle. They played a zone and forced us to shoot outside and kept Caleb from penetrating.”
Bishop stepped up its defensive intensity in the second half and Richey got hot.
“Defensively, our effort was better in the second half,” Prophet said. “We played with more energy in the second half.”
Thomas Lash added 12 points and Peter Kwock chipped in 10 points.
Richey and Will Busch were named to the all-tournament team.
Bishop Diego (2-2) makes its home debut on Monday against Kilpatrick.
