SBCC jumped ahead 13-4 in Saturday’s consolation semifinal of the Hancock Holiday Classic and never looked back on the way to a 68-58 men’s basketball win over Rio Hondo.
SBCC (4-7) will take on WSC North rival Cuesta, ranked 17th in the state, on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the consolation final.
The Vaqueros hit 8-of-18 from 3-point country, led by Logan Louks (3-5) and Cameron Nelson (2-2).
Louks scored 11 of his season-high 19 points in the opening half when the Vaqueros took a 34-27 lead. The 6-2 freshman from Danville hit 6-8 from the field and all four of his free throws.
Pablo Miranda had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jalani Davis collected nine points and 10 rebounds and Trace Yager had six boards. The Vaqueros dominated the rebound battle, 44-28.
Rio Hondo (1-10), which racked up 90 points in a loss to Hancock on Friday, shot just 35.8 percent and never got closer than eight in the second half.
“Our defense was really solid and we did a good job of holding them to one shot,” said coach Morris Hodges. “Our ball movement was much better and that led to good quality shots.”
Louks came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first half that pulled the Roadrunners out of their zone defense.
Nelson drained back-to-back triples to boost the lead to 50-37 with 11 minutes to play. SBCC shot nearly 50 percent in the second half and 43.1 for the game.
The Vaqueros enjoyed their biggest lead at 68-51 on two free throws by Louks with 42 seconds to play.
