Chad Lampe would not be denied in his second tournament of the season.
The Dos Pueblos senior wrestler pinned Warren’s Darren Dante in the third period to win the 126-pound weight class title at the Jackrabbit Invitational at Long Beach Poly on Saturday.
Lampe was coming off a runner-up finish at the Pete Duca Invite in Nipomo last weekend.
“He was pretty motiviated,” DP coach Anthony Califano said of his two-time Channel League champion. “He didn’t want to come up short again.”
Lampe was well ahead on points but didn’t want to leave anything to chance, Califano said. “He made it clear he wanted to be champion.”
Another highlight for DP was the return of Nico Sorenson at 120 pounds. He came back from an injury and finished second in his first competition.
Sorenson scored two pins en route to the finals. He lost to a wrestler from Pacifica in Orange County who finished third in CIF last year.
The one-day tournament drew 18-20 teams.
Other DP results: 106 pounds: Wynter Triplett 5th; 113: Esteban Flores, 7th; 120: Cameron Cox, 7th; 132: Jeffy Uyesaka, 5th; 182: Andy Garcia, 7th
