Grace Dickman scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Cate in a 41-16 girls basketball loss to Hueneme in an opening-round game of the Bishop Diego Bird Cage Classic on Wednesday.
The Rams couldn’t recover from a slow start in their first game of the season. They pulled to within three points with under three minutes to play but they couldn’t convert on some open 3-pointers to pull even. Hueneme made some timely baskets down the stretch to secure the win.
Dickman added four assists and three steals to go along with her scoring and rebounding.
“While any loss is hard to swallow, the girls can take pride in knowing that in their first game of the season they demonstrated great toughness, solid conditioning, and many, many bright spots on which to build over the next 14 games,” Cate coach Jay Dorion said.
The Rams return to tournament action Thursday against Carpinteria.
