Cate’s boys soccer team battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half on Friday to earn a draw with Channel Islands, the No. 3 team in Division 3.
Cate, the No. 3 team in Division 6, needed late goals from Joshua Yaro and Justin Kim to salvage the tie.
Yaro scored on a penalty kick in his season debut. Yaro is a two-time returning CIF First Team player.
Kim’s goal, which came within two minutes of the final whistle, was assisted by Joe Serugo, who redirected a long throw-in by Matthew Firestone.
Channel Islands got its first goal on a penalty kick in the 38th minute and then doubled the lead in the 60th minute.
“For starters, it was just great to have Josh back on the field. It lifted the entire team,” said Rams head coach Peter Mack. “Channel Islands was fast and very skilled, and played superb soccer–the best we’ve seen this year.
“They were more physical than us and we made a ton of unforced errors; but we finally figured out how to attack them. We were a different team during the final quarter of the game.”
Cate’s next game is Wednesday vs. Oak Park.
