Bishop Diego overcame some sloppy offensive play with a strong defensive effort in beating Villanova Prep, 39-29, in a pool play game at the Bird Cage Classic basketball tournament on Thursday.
“It was one of our best shooting nights, but the kids did a good job on defense,” Bishop coach Jeff Burich said.
Greer Shull scored 15 points to lead Bishop Diego. Jordyn Lilly had six points and seven rebounds and Josie McCoy added six points for the Cardinals (2-5), who play Providence Hall on Friday for a trip to the championship game.
Providence Hall defeated Cabrillo, 64-42, to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.
In other games, L.A. Grant beat Hueneme 42-21 and Cate defeated Carpinteria 40-27.
