Bishop Diego went on a 10-2 run in the third quarter to break a tie, and the Cardinals defeated South Pasadena, 44-34, for their third straight win and the consolation title at the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic on Saturday.
Bishop’s only tournament loss was to Troy, a CIF 1-A Division school.
All-tournament player Caleb Richey started Bishop’s decisive run with a basket to break a 21-21 tie. Will Busch scored inside and Grant Sexton knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner before South Pasadena’s Jason Qui scored. Busch followed with another basket and Richey ended the run with a free throw.
Leading 33-26 to start the fourth quarter, Bishop put together a nice possession of passing, which ended with Richey burying a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a 10-point advantage.
Richey led all scorers with 18 points. Thomas Lash added nine points for the Cardinals.
Qui and Daniel Grant each scored 12 points for South Pasadena.
