San Marcos fell to Bakersfield-Stockdale, 56-49, in the championship game of the Coast Union boys basketball tournament late Saturday.
Chris Ross, a 6-3 senior guard, scored 20 points to lead Stockdale. He was named the tournament MVP.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Royals.
“The game was a back-and-forth affair with several lead changes and ties,” San Marcos coach Dave Odell said. “In the end, Stockdale’s depth coupled with San Marcos’ foul trouble led to the Royals demise.”
Jake Wheelock scored 18 points for San Marcos, while Bryce Ridenour had another strong performance with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
Earlier, San Marcos completed pool play with a 67-26 rout of King City.
Uriel Hurtado scored 16 points and Kevin Hempy added 13 in limited action for the Royals.
“I thought we did a great job pressuring them into mistakes which led to easy baskets,” said Odell. “We had 29 steals in the game, which is really unheard of in a 32 minute game. Our second unit did a nice job extending the lead in the second half and our first four did not play the entire 4th quarter.”
The coach cited the play of senior Eric Rice.
