If not for the third quarter and/or Will Genske, Cate’s boys basketball team may have posted a victory on Saturday.
As it stands, the Rams fell to Pasadena Poly and Genske 52-46 in a non-league matchup.
The Panthers outscored the Rams 21-12 in the third quarter to gain an 11-point advantage heading into the final period. Cate shaved five points off the lead in the last eight minutes but ran out of time.
“Despite the tough loss, the Rams played some of their best basketball of the season,” reported Rams head coach Bryan Rodriguez. “This team is simply preparing to play its best basketball as we head into our league opener at the start of January.”
The two teams’ respective post players had a nice battle. Poly’s Will Genske led all scorers with 33 points while making 9-of-9 free throws. Cate’s Max Wankner totaled 21 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
The Rams (3-3) play Faith Baptist on Wednesday.
