Cruz Mertens paced Dos Pueblos’ boys basketball team on Friday night with 26 points and the Chargers defeated Lakewood 56-37 on the third day of the Ventura Kiwanis Tournament.
Dos Pueblos head coach Joe Zamora cited the Chargers’ defense as being a big factor in the victory as Lakewood made just 28 percent of its field goal attempts.
After averaging 20 points per game in the first two games of the tournament, Zachary Shugart scored six on Friday.
“Zach was a defensive presence and he made the extra pass to wide open teammates as he was double teamed often,” Zamora said.
