Westmont rebounds from first loss

Westmont recovered from its first men’s basketball loss of the season with a 67-61 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday in Claremont

“We played a lot better tonight,” said Westmont head coach John Moore. “We had a good shoot around today with a lot of intensity. The guys played with a hunger. We had the intensity we needed to have last night, so we learned the lesson and had a nice bounce back game.”

Preston Branson led the 8th-ranked Warriors (4-1) win 25 points and Mantus Drungys added another 12 points.

“Brenden Hill played a really nice game and gave us a real spark off the bench,” said Moore. “Aside from fouling out, Mantas played a really nice game.

“Our defense is what won the game for us,” said Moore. “We held Claremont to 40 percent from the floor. We haven’t been defending the three-point line well, but tonight we held them to 28 percent.

We even defended the free-throw line well,” he quipped.

The Warriors will play an exhibition on Tuesday at Cal State Bakersfield. The next day, Westmont takes off for Waxahachie, Texas where they will take on Jarvis Christian on Friday and Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Saturday.
