Vaqueros can’t recover from cold spell

A cold spell in the second half cost SBCC on Friday night in a 72-62 men’s basketball setback to Lassen at the Fresno City Tournament.

The Vaqueros (1-2) cut a 42-32 halftime deficit to two with a 15-7 run that pulled them within 57-55 with 8:30 to play. SBCC didn’t score for the next 4:09, however, and the Cougars reeled off nine straight to take a 66-55 advantage.

Mike Hansen led SBCC with 16 points and four rebounds while Rico Failla contributed 13 points and eight boards. Logan Louks scored 11, Pablo Miranda had 10 and Jalani Davis pulled down nine rebounds.

The Vaqueros took 17 more shots but Lassen won the shooting battle, 49 to 36 percent.

“We had some opportunities,” said coach Morris Hodges. “We missed some point-blank shots that would have made a difference. Our effort was really good. We just needed to execute a little better,”

The Vaqueros made 10-of-13 free throws but were outscored by nine as the Cougars hit 19-32.
