Dos Pueblos made 32 of 40 free throws on Friday night, each make proving valuable in a tight 69-66 victory for the Chargers over Rio Mesa.
The 80 percent clip was anchored by Cruz Mertens, who connected on 15 of 20 attempts and finished with 20 points. Zach Shugart scored a team-high 21 points.
The Chargers prevailed after a high scoring fourth quarter saw both teams score over 20. Rio Mesa had the games first edge, taking a 21-13 lead after the first quarter.
Rio Mesa’s Reggie Dixon led all scorers with 23 points.
Both teams complete the fourth day of the Simi Valley Tournament on Saturday. Dos Pueblos is 2-1, Rio Mesa falls to 1-2.
