Sophomores supplied all the goal-scoring to make Charles Bryant a winner in his coaching debut with the Carpinteria High girls soccer team on Thursday.
Merissa Souza, Alex Benitez and Monica Garcia scored the goals in a 3-0 win over Fillmore.
“The girls enacted a little revenge as Fillmore denied them the sole league championship last year in the Frontier League by beating them in the final game,” said Bryant, who coached the girls tennis team to a CIF championship a couple of weeks ago.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Freeman came up with a few huge saves early on to keep the game scoreless.
Souza got the Warriors on the scoreboard with a beautiful volley off an assist from Natalie Saito. Benitez made it 2-0 in the first half by knocking the ball past the goalkeeper during a goal-mouth scramble.
Garcia finished the scoring in the second half.
Bryant praised the defensive play of Erin Durflinger and Jasmine Montes De Oca. “They were much
more organized and composed in the back,” he said.
Carpinteria is back in action Friday against Bishop Diego.
