SBCC freshman Charlotte Skjonsby shot 85 in the opening of the Women’s Golf State Championship on Monday at Temecula Creek Inn.
Skjonsby is tied for 15th in the 35-player field. Defending state champion Kristin Grimes of Canyons and Kate Cho of Irvine Valley were co-medalists at 3-over-par 75.
“Charlotte started fast with a birdie at No. 1 but she had a few too many unforced errors,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “She’s certainly not out of the hunt to make All-State (top six finishers).”
Irvine Valley has a 12-stroke lead over Glendale (318-330) at the midpoint of the 36-hole tourney. Canada, the Northern Cal champion, is third at 340, three strokes ahead of San Joaquin Delta.
Skjonsby tees off at 9:17 a.m. in Tuesday’s final round.
