Sandy Grimaldo scored a goal near the end of each half on Tuesday and SBCC edged Moorpark 3-2 in a key WSC North women’s soccer match on the road.
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 19 in the state, improved to 10-3-4 overall and 6-1-2 in the WSC North.
It was the 100th win for eighth-year SBCC coach John Sisterson, who’s 100-34-31 with the Vaquero women for a percentage of .700.
Linn Viklund opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a penalty kick after Debora Fonseca was brought down in the box. Grimaldo made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute by taking a long pass on the edge of the box, beating three defenders and scoring from 20 yards.
Moopark, which started the day two points behind the second-place Vaqueros, fell to 8-9-1 and 5-4-0. The Raiders scored in the 58th and 80th minutes to tie the game at 2-2.
Two minutes later, Grimaldo struck again for the game-winner. Brandie Harris slotted a pass across the field and Grimaldo pumped in her 13th goal from 10 yards out.
Grimaldo took over the team scoring lead from Harris (31 points to 30). Grimaldo and Harris lead the squad with 13 goals apiece.
“We started off very well and showed great confidence in the first half,” said Sisterson. “When we conceded a goal, we were back on our heels a bit and then they tied it.
“Once we got that third goal, we got our confidence back. This was a game we had to win (to make the playoffs).”
The Vaqueros are ranked 14th in Southern Cal and the top 16 make the playoffs. SBCC finishes the regular season on Friday with a 3 p.m. game at Cuesta.
