SBCC completes rare unbeaten WSC season

Tessa Weller pounded a season-high 20 kills on Friday night and SBCC beat Moorpark 3-1 on the road to complete a perfect 10-0 WSC North women’s volleyball campaign. The scores were 27-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21.

Jenna Anderson was also outstanding with 14 kills, 16 digs and three aces. Emily Banas had a double-double (11 kills, 12 digs) for the Vaqueros, who extended their school record win streak to 14 matches.

The 17th-ranked Vaqueros (15-6, 10-0) won their third WSC title in the last four years. It’s the second time they’ve gone unbeaten in conference, joining the 1997 squad (8-0). Moorpark is 7-2 with one match remaining.

It was the sixth WSC championship for coach Ed Gover. SBCC captured 30 of 33 sets in conference play. The Vaqueros are 38-4 in conference over the last four seasons.

Ari Garner had 56 assists and did “an amazing job of setting and getting the ball to all her hitters,” according to Gover.
“We played like a solid team and didn’t worry about them making runs,” said Gover. “We just focused on scoring when we needed to.”

Bianca Castro had three blocks and Gover said Katie Dolan contributed “three amazing kills at critical times.”

The playoff pairings will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 18 and SBCC, ranked 12th in Southern Cal, is likely to be on the road.

“I’d like to complement our coaching staff — Armen Zakarian and Steve Zelko,” Gover added. “They put together a great game plan.”
