San Marcos dropped a 69-56 decision against a talented Sierra Canyon team in a boys basketball season opener at the Simi Valley Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Royals pulled to within two points (52-50) early in the fourth quarter, but after Christian Widmer and Kevin Hempy fouled out, Sierra Canyon was able to pull away in the final minutes.
“Sierra Canyon is one of the more talented teams we will play this year,” Royals coach Dave Odell said. “I think we will take a lot away from this game about the level of discipline and intensity we need to play with on every possession of the game.”
The Royals were led by Uriel Hurtado’s 17 points. Hempy added 14 and Bryce Ridenour tallied 12 points.
Odell praised the play of Hurtado at both ends of the floor against a talented Sierra Canyon team.
Sierra Canyon’s Derryck Thornton and Devearl Ramsey are considered two of the top freshmen in the country. They combined for 42 points.
San Marcos is back in action today against Westlake.
