The girls soccer teams from San Marcos and Pacifica battled to a season-opening 2-2 draw in Oxnard on Tuesday.
Less than two minutes from the opening whistle, Royals sophomore Kaitlyn Saperstein scored San Marcos’ first goal of the season to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead.
In the 55th minute, freshman Olivia Jones scored San Marcos’ second goal.
Pacifica was able to respond each time, drawing even with the Royals at 1-1 going into halftime and again in the second half.
San Marcos head coach Macie Berlin singled out first-year varsity player Tania Rosales for a “tremendous” performance in the midfield.
“We put up a good battle,” Berlin said.
San Marcos (0-0-1) plays again next Tuesday hosting Oxnard.
