Clara Madsen and Clarissa Coburn scored goals and Morgan Gainey recorded a shutout in her debut as Laguna Blanca beat Villanova 2-0 in a season-opening girls soccer match on Wednesday.
Madsen scored off a pass from Bryn Jewett for the first goal in the 20th minute.
Coburn made it 2-0 five minutes later, as she intercepted a poor Villanova clearance and shot at the goal. In the wet conditions, the goalkeeper bobbled the save and the ball slipped into the net.
Owls coach Kevin Shertzer cited the defense of junior Nadia Belton.
“All in all, I was very happy with our performance,” Shertzer said. “You never know how the first game of the year is going to turn out but everyone on the field gave their best effort and it’s great to start the year off with a win.”
