DeSilva sinks freebies to lift Vaqueros

Taylor DeSilva hit two free throws with 1:15 to go in overtime on Wednesday as SBCC rallied for a 71-69 women’s basketball victory at Bakersfield.

Brooke Amenta had 16 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Vaqueros, who improved to 5-1 in their first road game of the year. SBCC hit 40 percent from the field and prevailed despite making just 49 percent from the foul line (19-39) and committing 44 turnovers.

“What a crazy game,” said coach Sandrine Krul, whose team led 23-18 at halftime. “We didn’t have our big guns for the last 3-4 minutes and we still won. Our bench really came through.”

Bakersfield (1-2) tied the game at 62 on a layup with 20 seconds left in regulation.

DeSilva finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Mhiah Vickers and Michelle Herrera both had 11 points. Herrera handed out a team-high five assists.

Sara Crane contributed five points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals before fouling out. Keia Nobles had five points and seven boards.

The Vaqueros were down to one starter (Herrera) for the final three minutes of OT after Crane fouled out and Amenta and Nobles suffered minor injuries. The subs were DeSilva, Courtney Houston (9 points), Jennifer Thompson and Jasmine Mata.

Houston hit a baseline jumper to put the Vaqueros up 69-68 with 1:49 left in overtime. After the Renegades tied it with a free throw, DeSilva grabbed a defensive rebound, drove the length of the court and was fouled. She made both free throws to put the Vaqueros up 71-69.

“We played great defense at the end, including a huge deflection by Courtney,” noted Krul. “We had three big defensive stops in the last 49 seconds.”

SBCC is off for eight days before taking on Solano on Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. in the first round of the Sequoias Tournament.
