Laura Taira hit a game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of regulation and Elena Schneider knocked down a pair of treys in overtime to lift the Carpinteria girls basketball team to a 57-54 victory over Hueneme at the Fillmore Tournament on Wednesday.
“We had no business winning this game,” Carpinteria coach Dan Mercer said. “The girls never gave up and played with incredible heart.”
The Warriors rallied from an 8-point deficit in the final 2 1/2 minutes. They didn’t lead in the game until the overtime.
In the overtime, Schneider scored the deciding 3-pointer with 45 seconds left. Hueneme missed a couple of shots in the final seconds.
Schneider led the Warriors with 21 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Erin Saito added 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Bethany Lugo chipped in 10 points.
Mercer also cited the play of freshman Maddie Cleek, who came off the bench and hit a key free throw and grabbed a couple of rebounds.
He noted that the bench played a key role in the win because three starters fouled out.
Carpinteria is 2-0.
